San Jacinto, Masbate

“Every second that you spend on doubting your worth, every moment that you use to criticize yourself; is a second of your life wasted, is a moment of your life thrown away. It’s not like you have forever, so don’t waste any of your seconds, don’t throw even one of your moments away.”

Right after visiting the rock formations of Biri Island, I immediately took a boat back to Allen, Northern Samar so I can go back to Matnog, Sorsogon. Unfortunately, the boat already left and had no choice but to wait for the next trip by 4pm.

A local told me that there is another port wherein daily schedules are available from Northern Samar to Sorsogon through the Sta. Clara Port which is 3km away from Allen Port. I immediately rode a tricycle under a special trip for php50 and headed to the port hoping that I can get the next scheduled trip. I got the 2:30 pm schedule via Montengro Shipping Lines. I arrived in Matnog around 4pm and rode a bus going to Bulan. I stayed in Bulan overnight then got the first trip to San Jacinto the following day.

San Jacinto, Masbate is a 4th class municipality in Ticao Island together with Monreal, Batuan and San Fernando. The municipality lies in between Monreal and San Fernando. The island has been known to be a great dive spot due to the presence of different marine life.

Altamar Beach Resort

The Altamar Resort is one of the must stayed resort when you are in Ticao Island. This was established last 2005 by the Altarejos family has been a frequent host for most of the travelers when in the island. If you wanted an escape and total relaxation, you must consider this resort as your option. You can do a lot of activities such as snorkeling, trekking, horseback riding. They also have a mini zoo where the kids can have a close encounter with the animals or even rent a boat for island hopping. For more information, you can visit their website at

Manta Bowl

This is one of the best attraction that San Jacinto offers to their visitors and the reason why divers tend to go back and island is because of the Manta Bowl. The island is very famous because of the presence of manta ray and the manta bowl dive site. The island is considered as the manta ray capital of the country. with a depth of 25 meters, you will be able to experience swimming with the manta rays. You must have a least an advance scuba diving license for you to take part with this one of kind experience since you will need to descend at least  80 feet.

The Manta Bowl is not the same as Surigao where you will have a close encounter by just snorkeling. These manta rays are in the wild and maybe dangerous as well. You can coordinate with the tourism office to get information of the resorts that offer this package.

Catandayagan Falls

This majestic waterfall lies along the San Jacinto bay. It was first time to witness a waterfalls that goes directly to the ocean. Travel time is roughly around an hour from Sitio Mababoy before you reach this destination. There is no way for you to climb the waterfalls because the rocks are brittle enough due to the constant flow of water. The Catandayagan Falls is just one of the waterfalls that debouche into an ocean in Asia. Others such as Jeongbang Waterfall in South Korea, Mursala Island Waterfall in Indonesia and Düden Kıyı Şelalesi Waterfall in Antalya, Turkey.

This was the last destination I visited after San Miguel, Halea Nature Park, Puro Island and Isla Mababoy. I was really amazed of the waterfalls and did not expect that I am able to experience such beauty. I swam near the waterfalls and did not attempt to climb the rocks since from afar, you can immediately notice that the rocks are fragile enough due to continuous flow of water. According to the locals, the best time to visit the waterfalls is during summer since there are no big waves. But, you won’t be able to appreciate it due to less water flowing from the waterfalls.

The entire activity including island hopping, picture taking, swimming and lunch took at least 9-10 hours.  I arrived at San Jacinto by  5:30 pm and stayed there overnight. It was such an amazing experience and I am looking forward to explore more in Ticao Island.
